LEUKEMIA -
- characterized by presence of inactive leukocytes (white blood cell) of one type or another in the peripheral blood and by extensive hyperplasia(overgrowth) of the tissue producing that particular cell
- unknown cause
PREDISPOSING FACTORS:
- environmental, industrial exposure to radiation or chemicals
- infectious agents- retrovirus
- hereditary aspects such as family occurrence and or chromosomal abnormalities like down syndrome
- secondary to treatment administered for other diseases such as Hodgekin disease, therapy related leukemia among patient treated with chemotherapy or radiotherapy for a neoplastic disease
